1. Who is this methodology for?

The methodology is designed for 1st Cycle Compulsory Secondary Education students (11-12 years old) at PROA [1] programme developed in some Secondary Schools in Extremadura. Anyway, I am sure that this methodology may be even used as an example to develop similar ones for 2nd Cycle Compulsory Secondary Education (13-14 years old) and Bachillerato (15-17 years old) students

The methodology will be based on:

1. Student's interests.

2. The Four Language Skills: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening

From now on, this new approach to the learning of the English language will be known as: "English for my Own Interest" (EOI). Although, basing on the student's interests is not something new - others criticise this idea as difficult to carry out and poor since it is complicated to uphold a methodology on those interests - we really want our students get interested in learning English and I am totally convinced we have to take into account their own interests, that is, their reality and, of course, a stimulus to acquire knowledge in a significant way.

Once the students get in contact with the method, they can choose among different interests divided into four units and approach to the language through the four language skills. Hence, we are dealing with personalized education and adapted to the student's own interests which may be different with the passing of time.

In each unit the students will study or revise Grammar points as well as doing useful activities, the extra exercises in the Activity Book, vocabulary related to the Interests and the vocabulary established in the 1st Cycle of E. S. O. Curriculum, Culture Topics in relation to three important speaking countries (The UK, The USA and Australia) and Holidays. All of it through a big amount of links.

It is at the discretion of the teacher the task of carrying out individual or group projects, such as WebQuests. There are some examples of webquests you can see at the Teacher Zone.

2. Methodology Aims

With this methodology the student will be able to communicate in English successfully. For this purpose, it will be an interesting methodology for the student and it will allow him/her to achieve the most important objective when dealing with the language acqusition, THE COMMUNICATION.

I hope the students feel more comfortable using this methodology, improve their English and be interested in the process of learning. All of it, thanks to their own interests and taking into account the four basic skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

3. Methodology Materials:

The course has been designed as a database divided into two main zones: The Teacher Zone and The Student Zone.

The Teacher Zone

From here you could access the following contents:

  • Resources (Teachers): The Methodology will be provided with a lot of resources for the teacher, such as grammar and grammar exercises, dictionaries,printables,games, quizzes, flash cards, tests, and so on.

  • Portfolio: I have made up a page with information form different real sources to approach portfolio to teachers interested in this methodoloy. This document which comprises: a passport, a biography and a dossier will show the students' own record and reflection on their language learning and cultural experiences.

  • The Teacher's Book contains:

  • Introduction.
  • Didactic Units Notes
  • Webquests and Projects Notes.
  • Teacher Resources.

  • Web 2.0 Applications: We are not going to miss Applications 2.0 in this methodology. As mentioned in the page, they are tools (usually free) we can find in the internet, simple and very helpful in the teaching area, and of course in the acquisition of a language. They present themselves as collaborative, they promote autonomous learning and allow more participationn in group activities. These applications will definitively increase our students' interest and motivation for the language and the process of learning by itself.

  • WebQuests/WebQuest Examples: The idea of this page is to approach teachers to the world of webquests; tools which enables team work and the fact of "learning to learn" through the internet. You will see here webquests examples ready to use in the classroom, or you can even adapt them to your students' level of English or any other idea you bear in mind.

  • International Days: I consider them an important issue to work with in the classroom since they can show both, students and teachers, RESPECT. By celebrating days such as International Women's Day or International Day of Peace, we are contributing to make a better society with significant and true values. You could read relevant information about these days as well as activities your students will enjoy!

  • Social Issues: As teachers, we shouldn't forget dealing with topics such as environment, tolerance, bullying, and so on. They have to be part of the E. S. O. student's curriculum so they can be aware of them, go deeper and know about their consequences.

The Student Zone

The student, under the teacher's guidance, will access these sections:

  • Resources (Students): They are linked to the interests in this methodology. The will be very useful if the students want to go a little bit further in their studies. The resources refer to those of music, sports, cinema and television, internet and animals.

  • The Activity Book contains:

  • Extra Activities different to those proposed in the Student's Book for all the thematic units or Interests.

  • The Student's Book contains:

  • A welcome Page with the three main parts of the method:

  1. Interests: Music, Sports, Cinema and Television, Internet and Animals. By means of the four basic skills, the students will work and play with activities linked to those interests.
  2. Culture: Students will deal with resources and activities about three English spoken countries: The UK, The USA and Australia.
  3. Grammar: A list of grammar points - with a great variety of activities - as shown in the Extremadura Curriculum for the English subject in the 1st Cycle of E. S. O.

  • Holidays: The student will find here interesting and funny activities related to important holidays celebrated in some English spoken countries as for example, St. Valentine, Christmas, Halloween, etc.

  • Vocabulary: The students will revise vocabulary related to these academic years: The Body, Clothes, The School, The House, etc. There are numerous exercises to learn vocabualry and have a good time!
